The residential center rises above a gentle slope that leans out towards the sea, between the
promontory of Punta Sardegna to the west and
Capo d’Orso to the east. Its is the port of departure for La Maddalena.
In the 18th century the coastline took on an important defensive role; Palau, like La Maddalena and Caprera, became one of the many “sentinels” deployed for the protection of the Strait of Bonifacio. Numerous fortifications were erected in strategic points, of which those of Altura and Capo d’Orso are among the most beautiful and imposing.
The
Commercial Port consists of a north-facing dock that hosts ferry liners.
The Marina is sheltered to the south by a wharf that stretches from the beginning of the commercial dock. Mooring is possible on both sides of floating docks and water and electricity are available. Refueling can be done in
Darsena where there is also a 20 t crane. Anchors, telephone, toilet facilities and parking also available. In the immediate vicinity you can find supplies and services of any kind.
Around the residential center you can find some excellent viewpoints that look out over an ample panoramic coastline. The view from Capo D’Orso is dominated by the eastern slope that embraces
Santo Stefano,
Caprera,
Capo Ferro,
Baia Sardinia and
Arzachena’s Golfo delle Saline (“Saltworks Gulf”). From Barrage the entire territory of Palau can be seen, both towards the sea and inland. From Monte Altura the view covers all the Archipelago and the western slope towards
Punta Falcone, near
Santa Teresa Gallura.
